LETTERS FROM THE NORTH OF EUROPE Extracts from family letters, printed ire the "Star" During 1852 T TAVING filled so much of my letter with matters so closely personal, what shall I tell you of general interest to amuse you through the remainder of it? Having lived latterly within the walls (I was about to say of a house) of the city, I know of nothing which would interest you; but for the nonce we will take a little foot journey outside of the great turf and dirt walls of the town to one of the most pleasant places in the suburbs of Copenhagen. We start in the warm sunlight of a spring morning, after two or three days of warm mild weather have dried the gravel walks, swelled the budlets on the trees and bushes and filled the bursting mouths of the birds with one of the sweetest of nature's lyrics. Going out of the city, we pass under the long low arch of the western gate, and out upon the drawbridge. Here of course we stop to gaze back at the enormous strength of the city fortifications. Great walls which must have required an army of men to complete within the compass of a century--a broad double moat and the precaution of other but lower walls beyond all, tell of the fighting times when these things were reared. Upon the main wall is a very broad carriage road and three or four wide footways under the most shady of trees, from which one looks down on the lofty houses of the city. In the angles are windmills, whose long arms swing to the blast with the most poetical of whizzing sounds. Such is the wall of Copenhagen. I, a tyro in old cities, had expected to see something more nearly resembling one of our frugal farmer's stone fences, than a greensided mass of earth like that upon which you and I are gazing this morning.
