What is the difference between cultured and natural pearls?
The vast majority of pearls are cultured and this covers all pearls on the market today, including South Sea, Tahitian, Akoya, and freshwater pearls (excluded are pearls made of synthetic materials in factories, these are often called Costume pearls or jewelry). The main differences between a freshwater cultured pearl and a saltwater cultured pearl is where they have been cultured, and the nucleation:Freshwater pearls are, of course, cultured in a freshwater environment, like a lake or stream, usually in mussels. The other three main varieties are cultured in saltwater, usually in oysters. Freshwater pearls are mantle nucleated, in other words a piece of the mantle of a sacrificed mollusk is inserted into the receiving mollusk where the ‘nacre’ forms around it to produce the pearl. All saltwater pearls, however, which include Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea, are bead nucleated. A small bead is inserted with the mantle tissue and the nacre forms around the bead.

What is the difference between Pearls and Mother of Pearls?
A pearl is made of layers of crystalline forms of calcium carbonate held together by an organic substance known as conchiolin. Its composition is identical to that of the nacre, which forms the interior layer of the mollusk or oyster shell. Mother of pearl (or nacre), is a material that forms the shell lining of most mollusks.

What is the best way to wear pearls?
Fashion moves fast and can be a mix of traditional and modern tastes. Thanks to Coco Chanel who made pearls including faux pearls mainstream, sky’s the limit on how you wear them! Our favorite ways include mixing the earth’s treasures, so mixing pearls with silver and gold metals and also crystals such as rose quartz and amethyst stones. The look of pearls is timeless so go classic or go rock n’ roll, it’s up to you! Remember… wear your pearls because they retain their luminosity with the help of our body chemistry (see FAQ 4 J).

Pearls are delicate organic gems that need to be worn! So, wear them! They respond to our body chemistry and retain their luminosity when worn. Watch how you wear them, however. Perfumes, creams and hairsprays can damage the luster of your pearls so be mindful of how you bring your pearls into contact with your beauty products
